MIA has revealed that she initially offered 'Sexodus', a track from her new album, to Madonna
As well as performing together at last year's Super Bowl halftime show, during which MIA famously gave the camera the middle finger, the pair collaborated on two tracks from Madonna's 2012 album 'MDNA', 'Give Me All Your Luvin' and 'B-Day Song'.
Now MIA has revealed that 'Sexodus' could have been recorded by the pop superstar too. "I actually played that song to Madonna when I wrote it and said, 'Oh you can have this'," MIA explained in an interview with The Guardian. "She gave it back to me."
Although Madonna felt 'Sexodus' was wrong to her, the track still prompted a discussion between the two artists about what you do when you have it all. "So I was like, what d'you do? And she said, 'You spend it!' And I said, no, I don't think that's the right answer."
Asked by The Guardian whether this affected her opinion of Madonna, MIA replied: "No, because Madonna is true to Madonna. She always said she was a material girl."
'Sexodus' will now appear on MIA's forthcoming album 'Matangi' as a collaboration with The Weeknd. The long-awaited album is finally due for release on November 5 and will also include the singles 'Bad Girls', 'Come Walk With Me' and 'Bring The Noize'. MIA has recently unveiled a 90-second snippet of 'Y.A.L.A.', another new song from the album.

Alamo Drafthouse Bans Madonna

A Texas-based theater chain has banned Madonna after the pop star was apparently admonished for rudely texting during a premiere screening.
Madonna was reportedly texting up a storm while attending the New York Film Festival premiere of12 Years A Slave last week and reacted in a rather spectacularly annoyed manner when asked to stop (‘It’s for business … enslaver!”).
The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain has long had a strict no-talking and anti-texting policy for its theaters, and will eject any patron that violates the policy. So when word of the incident reached Alamo founder and CEO Tim League, he tweeted (below) that Madonna would no longer be welcome at the chain until she “apologizes to movie fans.”
Asked by EW if he was serious about the ban — at one point while defending his stance on twitter he had called it a joke — League replied late Saturday, “Yeah, I’m serious, but I don’t think it really affects her life that much.”
League pointed out his initial tweet was an “offhand joke, a spur of the moment 140 characters” and was “more of a means to get the issue out there, that it is rude to text during movies.”
“But now that it seems to have taken hold, sure I’m going to enforce it,” he added.

Madonna's 1985 Look-Alike Still Madge's Biggest Fan

In 2008 MTV News caught up with JeanAnn Difranco, winner of their 1985 'Macy's Madonna Land' look-alike contest.  JeanAnn has two children, 10-year-old Angelo and 6-year-old Gianna and has passed her adoration for Madonna to her children. Angelo knows all about his mother's love for the pop icon, and little Gianna even resembles Madge's own daughter, Lourdes. Dressed like a little Madonna look-alike herself, Gianna was wearing a lace dress, a crucifix necklace and the quintessential '80s Madonna accessory: the lace glove.  JeanAnn has never missed a Madonna concert, even when she was pregnant, and she was thrilled to purchase Madge's new album.

Nelly defends Miley Cyrus and says she is scrutinized due to the ubiquity of social media.

"Madonna, she did it her way, and she became one of the greatest female entertainers of all time," Nelly said. "Madonna grew up in the age of no social media. She wasn't under the type of scrutiny that Miley's under. Yeah, Miley twerked on stage at 20, but Madonna kissed two girls on stage at 50. Come on, man. Leave her alone."

Did someone just try to tell Madonna what to do?

Madonna was a surprise attendee at the  premiere of '12 Years a Slave' on Tuesday, Oct. 8.  Inside the screening at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theatre, however, the pop legend apparently dispensed with standard moviegoer etiquette. As first reported in the New York Post's Page Six, "a mysterious blonde in black lace gloves who wouldn't stop texting throughout the first half of the movie" sat in front of one anonymous audience member.  The irked moviegoer continued: "Eventually, a woman next to me tapped her on the shoulder and told her to put her phone away, and the blonde hissed back, 'It's for business... enslaver!'" The observer eventually figured out that the rude, unapologetic lady in black gloves was Madonna herself. Another attendee at the screening tells Us Weekly: "Some people are shocked by this, because Madonna was visibly tearing up, everybody there thought that she was very moved by it. She really wanted to say hello to Steve McQueen and congratulate him."

Madonna Among Songwriters Hall of Fame Nominees

Madonna and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are among this year's nominees for the Songwriters Hall of Fame, along with Kinks leader Ray Davis, John Mellencamp, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart and Nile Rodgers, The Associated Press reports. Sade, Cyndi Lauper and Linda Perry are also up for the 2014 class of inductees.

Other nominees for this year include Jim Weatherly and William "Mickey" Stevenson in the nonperforming songwriter category, and Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham for writing duos.  "Always on My Mind" writer Mark James is also among this year's nominees with Don Robertson, Graham Gouldman and Tony Macaulay.

Last year's inductees included Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, as well as Mick Jones and Lou Gramm from Foreigner.

Eligible voters have until December 16th to pick two nominees from the songwriter-performer list and three from the nonperformer list. The 2014 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction will be held at the New York Marriott Marquis on June 12th.

Niles Rodgers on never working with Madonna again

In the history of pop second winds, Nile Rodgers may be setting a record. From the mid Seventies through the late Eighties, Rodgers' footprint was all over the charts. First, he was the co-founder of the iconic disco band Chic, the man who co-wrote and played guitar on "Le Freak," "Good Times," and Sister Sledge's "We Are Family." Although Chic disbanded in 1983, Rodgers went on to become one of pop's most ubiquitous producers, helming records by David Bowie (Let's Dance), Madonna(Like a Virgin), and Duran Duran (Notorious) and hits by the Thompson Twins, the B-52s and many more. Drug addiction curtailed Rodgers' life and career in the Nineties, but he's blasted back as EDM's most beloved founding father: in the last year and a half alone, he's worked with Daft Punk("Get Lucky," "Lose Yourself to Dance") and Avicii ("Lay Me Down") along with David Guetta, Disclosure and other dance producers. Talking with Rolling Stone in his Manhattan apartment, Rodgers clicked through some of the legends and newcomers he's worked with and some of his favorite tales about them.


On why he hasn't worked with Madonna since Like a Virgin in 1984:There were two things going on at the time that she would probably deny, but it's absolutely the truth.She didn't want to go out [on tour] without me as her musical director. Which is impossible, because I make records. So maybe in some strange way, she felt a little bit slighted or betrayed. That was a little bit of it.

Also, she had just married Sean [Penn], and Sean had a huge problem with my girlfriend at the time, even though, when they got engaged, they did it at her apartment. They were living at her apartment, all that sort of stuff. But sometimes that can backfire on you, and that's what happened. So that had a little bit to do with it. She was incredibly loyal to Sean at the time. Of course, I'm going to be loyal to my girlfriend. So this is all stuff that nobody would think about, nobody would admit to. But it really is the absolute truth.

And then, probably, the biggest impediment was my deal, which was a massive deal, and it guaranteed that the next record would absolutely be the same. If you think about it from my point of view, I earned that. And I certainly had no reason to back down. "I just gave you a 20-something-million-selling record! Why should I take less?" But why should she pay more, now that she's got a 20-something-million-record? That doesn't make any sense.

So you put all of those things together. She and I have never talked about it, because I know I would stick to my guns. I've spoken to many people who were involved in the deal, and they said, "Oh, Nile, just be a bigger person." And I'm saying, "Guys, it's just technical. You have to put in context." At the time, no one believed in her but me and a couple other people. I would love to work with Madonna again, but I certainly would absolutely say, "Here's the contract, it's already done. Let's do this." And she would probably say no, and I would understand that. I guarantee you she's not paid anything like that ever since. But we never had a falling out, and we're totally great friends. I don't lament not working with Madonna at all. I don't even think about it, until other people mention it.

Art For Freedom Grants

Madonna has announced a grants program in coordination with Art For Freedom, the global digital initiative designed to fuel free speech, to address, respond and protest persecution around the world.  Madonna kicked off Art For Freedom on September 24, 2013 by posting Secretprojectrevolution, a 17-minute video she created with Steven Klein. The film – ‘a call to action’ – originally premiered on Vice and remains downloadable on Bit Torrent. Artists are encouraged to submit their own work on artforfreedom.com in the form of video, music, poetry or photography to express their personal meaning of freedom and revolution.
As part of the Art For Freedom initiative, Madonna has launched a grants program to support individuals and organizations working to advance social justice. Over the course of the next year she will select one artist each month whose creative expression helps fight oppression, intolerance and complacency. Madonna will award $10,000 to a nonprofit organization or project of the winning artist’s choice. All projects must be focused on a social justice issue and exemplify the values of Art For Freedom.
Madonna will select the winning submission each month with the help of a guest curator beginning with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I want to help give a creative voice to those who have been silenced and denied their human rights. Art for Freedom is a platform that gives artists a chance to define freedom through their art. We have already received many incredible submissions. I am inviting all people to express their thoughts on the subject of freedom whether it’s describing specific persecution they have experienced, sharing how their rights have been violated and / or sharing their ideas creatively regarding fighting injustice.

Art For Freedom, launched in partnership with Vice, received over 1000 submissions in the first 48 hours of its inception. These submissions and the ones that follow will become part of the Art For Freedom platform and will be eligible for the Arts For Freedom grants program. Miley versus Madonna

When it comes to music, sex sells. Sex and music seem to go hand in hand, but when does it cross the line into just plain awkward?

Draped in a wedding dress, Madonna, the queen of sexual controversy, shocked the crowds of the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 1984 with her unique rendition of “Like a Virgin.”

Jumping forward in time 29 years, we see Miley Cyrus making another sexual statement at the VMAs, dressed in a latex bikini, caressing herself and singer Robin Thicke with a foam finger.

Cyrus told reporters regarding her performance, “Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history.”

Madonna had a bad girl reputation that included playing with Catholic iconography like marriage, crucifixes, and alters to express her Catholic upbringing, while at the same time infuriating the Catholic Church.

Cyrus seems to be experimenting with nudity and a party-girl persona to combat the character she played as the lead on the Disney Channel children’s show “Hannah Montana.”

While Madonna inspired teenagers to stand up for themselves and express themselves through fashion, Cyrus has inspired teens to objectify their bodies for attention and that dangerous drugs are the way to have a good time.

“I would choose letting my kids watch a Madonna video over Miley Cyrus any day of the week,” UVM alumna Tennyson Cox said.

It seems Cyrus has put so much emphasis on making a statement that she forgot that she inspires a large group of young women who have been following her since her start on “Hannah Montana.”

For Cyrus to top Madonna and make a name for herself, she had to cross the line between the current version of tasteful and what makes the viewer uncomfortable.

Through lyrics like those in her track “Dancing with Molly,” Cyrus is condoning the use of a drug that is dangerously popular in her fan base. 

This separates her from other musicians, like Lady Gaga, who try to make a statement that encourages positive qualities in today’s youth.

With all of the negative backlash from her VMA performance and two proceeding music videos, Cyrus has achieved her goal of making music history, though it comes at the price of her previously decent reputation. 

While she lacks the inspiring quality of Madonna, they are both testaments to the fact that sex really does sell.
