For the Record...You Can Dance
Released: November 17, 1987
“You Can Dance” by Madonna is released. Produced by Madonna, Stephen Bray, Nile Rodgers, Reggie Lucas, Mark Kamins, and John “Jellybean” Benitez, it is recorded from May 1982 - September 1987. The seven track compilation is the first remix album from Madonna and features tracks from her first three albums remixed by John “Jellybean” Benitez, Shep Pettibone, Bruce Forest, and Frank Heller and Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero. The set is filled out by the track “Spotlight” which is an outtake from the “True Blue” sessions. The album is sequenced so that the tracks are mixed together in a continuous sequence on both sides to emulate a DJ’s club set. A promotional version of the album will be released to radio that features edited versions of the tracks with cue banding between the songs. Warner Bros will also issue three promo 12” singles to club DJ’s that will become heavily sought after by collectors. “You Can Dance” will peak at number fourteen on the Billboard Top 200, spending one week at number one on the Club Play chart, and is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

For the Record: The Look of Love

Madonna was
inspired by the 1954 film 'Rear Window' and the look that actor James Stewart
gave actress Grace Kelly. She said: "I can't describe it, but that is the
way I want someone to look at me when he loves me. It's the most pure look of
love and adoration. Like surrender. It's devastating."
"The
Look of Love" was released in the United Kingdom, some European countries
and Japan. "I Know It", a track from Madonna's self-titled debut
album, appeared as the B-side. In 1989,
the song was used as the B-side for the "Express Yourself" single
release. In the United Kingdom,
"The Look of Love" was released on December 12, 1987 and entered the
UK Singles Chart at position 15. The next week, it reached a peak of nine on
the chart, her first single to miss the top five since "Lucky Star".
It reached the top ten of the charts in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands and
the United Kingdom. It also charted in France, Germany and Switzerland, while
on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles of Billboard, it reached 17.
Madonna's
only live performances of the song were on her Who's That Girl World Tour in
1987. As she finished the performance of
"Causing a Commotion", the spotlight was focused on her. The
introductory music of "The Look of Love" started and Madonna roamed
around the stage, pretending that she was lost.
She wanted
to portray her Who's That Girl character Nikki, when she was lost in a similar
sequence in the film. After she finished singing the song, Madonna pretended to
walk forward by pushing through the air, as the conveyor belt took her
backwards, ultimately taking her away from the stage.

For the Record...La Isla Bonita
Release Date:
Hot 100 Chart Peak: 4
Surely one
of Madonna’s most timeless tracks is “La Isla Bonita,” the gentle, dreamy
recollection of utopian San Pedro. As a romance, it’s touching, and as a
personal reflection, it’s beautiful.
The
Spanish-flavored track seems to be a favorite of Madonna's, as it has been
included on the setlists of many of her concert tours. She also performed it at
the 2007 Live Earth benefit show in London. "La Isla Bonita" was the
fifth and final single from her "True Blue" album, and the cut
reached No. 4 on the Hot 100.
"La
Isla Bonita" was released in February 1987 as the fifth single from True
Blue. It was the first of Madonna's top 10
singles to incorporate a Latin feel. The song was first offered to Michael Jackson.
Madonna worked with Patrick Leonard to re-write some of the lyrics and "La
Isla Bonita" became another top 5 pop hit. The accompanying video included
an appearance by actor Benicio del Toro.
