Vogue's 25th Anniversary

It's hard to believe it, but Madonna's seminal smash, "Vogue," was released 25 years ago this month.
Jose Xtravaganza and Salim "Slam" Gauwloos, two dancers who appeared in the iconic "Vogue" video and subsequently toured with Madonna, reunited in Los Angeles to re-create the famed choreography in this short video honouring the anniversary -- and the results are pretty amazing.
Jose Xtravaganza and fellow dancer Luis Camacho Xtravaganza are often credited with introducing Madonna to the Harlem House Ball community which, in turn, inspired her to write the song and feature the dance style in her music videos and tours.

All 16 of the Icons Name-Dropped in Madonna’s “Vogue” Are Now Gone

An odd bit of trivia about the passing of Lauren Bacall on Tuesday: As Marci Robin pointed out on Twitter, all 16 of the 20th-century stars immortalized in Madonna's “Vogue” are now dead. The famous black-and-white music video, directed by David Fincher, is an homage to the golden age of Hollywood.

The song came out in March of 1990; Greta Garbo died just a month later. (James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and others had already gone, of course.) Bacall, 24 years on, was the final one.  The song was a tribute, of course, to a certain kind of old-fashioned glamour. With Bacall gone, that flame has just about burned out.

Greta Garbo (April 15, 1990)
Marilyn Monroe (Aug. 5, 1962)
Marlene Dietrich (May 6, 1992)
Joe DiMaggio (March 8, 1999)
Marlon Brando (July 1, 2004)
James Dean (Sept. 30, 1955)
Grace Kelly (Sept. 14, 1982)
Jean Harlow (June 7, 1937)
Gene Kelly (Feb. 2, 1996)
Fred Astaire (June 2, 1987)
Ginger Rogers (April 25, 1995)
Rita Hayworth (May 14, 1987)
Lauren Bacall (Aug. 12, 2014)
Katharine Hepburn (June 29, 2003)
Lana Turner (June 29, 1995)
Bette Davis (Oct. 6, 1989)

For the Record...Keep It Together

Released as the sixth and final single from the 'Like a Prayer' album on January 30, 1990; "Keep It Together" was initially planned to carry with it a previously unreleased b-side. The b-side in question? "Vogue." Luckily, that anthem would go on to have its own single release. Instead, "Keep It Together" set sail on its own -- without a sexy b-side to spice up sales. In the United States, "Keep It Together" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 56, on the issue dated February 3, 1990. The next week, "Keep It Together" jumped to number 41, becoming one of the greatest gaining songs. It eventually peaked at number eight on the Hot 100, on the issue dated March 31, 1990.  Its redux was reminiscent of the then-popular track "Back to Life" by Soul II Soul.  In Australia, it was released as the B-side of "Vogue", while it was not released in the United Kingdom at all, where "Dear Jessie" served as the album's final single.

Madonna and Music Producer Win 'Vogue' Sampling Lawsuit

A court rules that "no reasonable audience" would find the sampled portions of a 1976 composition significant "nor would they recognize the appropriation."

A lawsuit claiming thatMadonna and producerRobert "Shep" Pettibone illegally sampled a tune on her 1990 international hit "Vogue," has been resolved with a ruling favor of the defendants.  The original lawsuit was filed in July by VMG Salsoul, the copyright owner of a 1976 composition called "Love Break." The plaintiff alleged that it was only through new technology that the "deliberately hidden" sampling had been detected.
But a U.S. District Court judge in California has ruled on summary judgment that sampling of the Horn hit was "trivial," in that in could not be recognized.
"Having listened to the sound recordings of Chicago Bus Stop, Love Break, and Vogue, the Court finds that no reasonable audience would find the sampled portions qualitatively or quantitatively significant in relation to the infringing work, nor would they recognize the appropriation," the ruling reads. "The Court finds that any sampling of the Horn Hit was de minimis or trivial."
Says attorney Richard Busch, who represented the defendants: "We are thrilled with the decision, and believe it is absolutely the right result."

23 years of Madonna's Vogue

bat4_(35).jpg

The best moments of Madonna's performances of Vogue over the last 23 years.
1990-2013

"Vogue" is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her soundtrack album I'm Breathless (Music from and Inspired by the film Dick Tracy). Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, the origin of the dance Vogue, and they introduced "Vogueing" to her at the New York City club "Sound Factory".

Madonna has performed the song in five of her tours, as well as the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards and at her performance during the half-time show of Super Bowl XLVI.

After its release, "Vogue" reached number one in over 30 countries worldwide, becoming Madonna's biggest hit at that time. It was also the best-selling single of 1990 with sales of more than two million, and has sold more than six million copies worldwide to date. In the U.S., massive airplay and sales demand in response to the popular music video in April 1990 made way for "Vogue"'s number 39 debut in the week of April 14. The song shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in its sixth week on the chart, displacing Sinéad O'Connor's four-week run in the top spot with "Nothing Compares 2 U".

I still think it's crazy this was originally going to be a B-Side for "Keep It Together.

Madonna sued over 'Vogue'

Madonna is facing legal action after allegedly failing to pay to sample another song in her classic hit Vogue.  Executives at record company VMG Salsoul have accused the Material Girl of using the horns and strings heard in Salsoul Orchestra's dance tune Chicago Bus Stop (Ooh, I Love It).  In the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles and obtained by TMZ.com, it is claimed Madonna has made huge profits off Vogue since its release in 1990.  Music bosses only recently discovered the apparent sample in Madonna's song thanks to new technology designed to identify specific sounds.  VMG Salsoul chiefs are now suing for copyright infringement and demanding unspecified damages.
Listen at around 4:35 mins. I wonder if they are also going to sue 50 Cent for 'Candy Shop'.  The intro to his songs also sample this piece.  Listen at around 5:40 mins and then take a listen to the 'Candy Shop' intro.
